Fresco Italian Deli

The brief for the cash wrap was space, storage and portability. The old cash wrap was just one long counter that did not make good use of the space. By designing the new cash wrap in an "L" shape we were able to free up space in front of the storefront window for customers while not removing space behind for staff. The main piece is on casters as it covers a trap door in the floor that needs to be accessed from time to time.

The other part of the cash wrap, replacing a thin wire shelf, is a hefty piece secured to the floor to hold product in front while containing storage and drawers in back. Attached to this is a hinged countertop which enables staff to move from front to back.

The design of the cash wrap marries familiar materials with the unexpected, natural with the manmade. Humble knotty pine boards in their natural color contrasts with the hot rolled steel top which adds to the informality of the space. Letters were handmade from steel and used like branding irons to naturally embellish the front with the deli's logo,  staying true to the materials. All casework was then coated with a matte water-based sealer and the steel elements were blackened with boiled linseed oil and sealed with wax.
